David, born in Omeo, Victoia was the fourth of ten children of Thomas Fancourt Tomkins ( Farmer, born in Eumarella, Victoria) and Sarah Ann Martin (born in Paraparap, Victoria). The family had moved to Columboola in QLD where Thoams was an Orchardist.
David was living in Columboola, QLD and working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. Serving with the 26th Infantry Battalion, and briefly with the Machine Gun Corps, David - a Private (Service No: 6211 - was Wounded in Action on two occasions.
His older brother, Thomas Fancourt Tomkins Jmr laso served with the AIF as a Private (Service No: 5415) from 1916 to 1918
Returning to Australia, David married Dorothy Kathleen Vaughan in 1920 in Brisbane, QLD and joined the QLD Railways. In 1922, the family was living Cooladdie in Charleville, QLD where David was a Lengthsman. The family then moved to Boonah near Ipswich in QLD where David was a Fettler, then to Stanthorpe QLD and in the 1940s to Brisbane. David was living and working in Beaudesert, QLD when he died in 1956
