Ray was one of the sons of Lt John William Norrish (Service no 2970) John William Norrish enlisted in September 1915 and fought in many of the Egyptian campaigns with the 10th LHR.
Ray enlisted in October 1916 He was 18. His brothers Joseph William Norrish (service no. 3306) joined 24 November 1916 and Francis Victor Norrish (Service no 3188) joined 30 October 1916. Joseph was 17 and Francis 16 (he stated on his enlistment form that he was 21 and three months. Joe (Joseph) also lied about his age stating he was 18 and 8 months. He was attached to the 10th LHR and also served in Egypt. He returned to Australia in August 1919. Joe re-enlisted during WW11 (Service no W26512)
Francis (also known as Vic) was assigned to the 48th Battalion and was sent to France and was wounded in Action in October 1917. He returned to Australia in July 1919 and died in January 1983.
The boys were also cousins of Lce Carl Lindsay Lewis Stirling Chipper (Service No 97) and his brother Ross Richard Vivian Richard Chipper (Service No 68) who died in the Battle of the Nek and are buried at Ari Burnu, Gallipoli

Raymond Richard John Norrish was born in Albany, Western Australia in January 1899 to parents John and Gertrude Norrish farmers at Kulikup via Kojonup. He was one of ten siblings.
Raymond enlisted into the AIF in October 1916 at Blackboy Hill, Perth at the age of 18 years, his calling was farm hand. His father and two brothers had also enlisted into the AIF.
Raymond embarked from Fremantle in May 1917 aboard HMAT Sydney with the 27th reinforcements, 10thLight Horse Regiment as a trooper. His brother Joseph was also attached to the 10th Light Horse Regiment sailing with Raymond.
Raymond arrived at Suez, Egypt in June 1917. The following month he was admitted to hospital with Malaria. Released from hospital he conducted training with his regiment. In the October 1917 he was further to hospitalised with sore throat and chest complaints. He was admitted to the No 14 Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, Egypt.
In December 1917 Raymond was diagnosed with Pulmonary Tuberculosis and placed on the seriously ill listed. It was on the night of the 31st December 1917 at 11.45pm that Raymond succumbed to his illness, aged 18 years. He was buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
A letter home from a nurse to Raymond’s mother described him as always having a cheery smile and cheery words for everyone. They all loved his curly hair.
