Wallace was the fifth of seven children of Robert Bertram Eglington Montgomery (b1852 in Northumberland, England) and second wife Mary Davis (b1854 in Ross, Tasmania). Robert worked in Northumberland as an Iron Works Labourer before moving to London where he was a Police Constable. He immigrated in 1885, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Florida, and worked in Sydney as a Carpenter. In 1889 the Police Gazette carried a 'Missing Person' notice on behalf of his wife in London - Emma wanted to remarry. Robert and Mary had three children in Sydney and Melbourne before settling in Ringarooma in Tasmania in 1891. They married in 1918.
Wallace was one of four brothers to enlist in the AIF - Walter and Arthur returned home, and Wallace and Alex were KiA. Wallace was a Miner when he enlisted in 1914 (Private; Service No:1162) and was attached to the 15th Infantry Battalion when he was KiA at Gallipoli in May 1915.
