Vale Howard Hendrick DFC OAM
We honour the memory of Howard Hendrick DFC OAM, who passed away last week at the age of 102.
A Lancaster bomber pilot during the Second World War, Howard joined the RAAF on Anzac Day 1942 and completed 31 operational missions over Europe. His distinguished wartime service was recognised with the Distinguished Flying Cross and France's Legion of Honour.
The citation accompanying his Distinguished Flying Cross read:
“Flying Officer Hendrick has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty.”
Beyond his wartime service, Howard was a flying instructor, commercial airline pilot, respected Riverland community figure, and twice named Loxton Citizen of the Year.
We remember his courage, service, leadership and humility. Lest we forget.
