Walter Tom Gooding enlisted at the age of 21 and joined the 29th Battalion in France on the 12 April 1917, serving for a little over five months before he was killed in action on either the 26 or 27 September 1917 during the attacks by the 29th Battalion, as part of the 5th Division, on Polygon Wood in Belgium. Nothing is known of his death, he is still missing and his name is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial. His older brother, Harold Gooding was killed three days later aged 24, whilst serving with the 8th Field Artillery Brigade AIF.
