Son of John Oldfield and Ellen Oldfield of Queanbeyan, NSW.

During 1896c Joseph  married Mary Ann Heath in Newtown, NSW. Father of William Joseph Oldfiedl who was killed in action on 13 February 1917 while serving with the 18th Battalion and has no known grave. His names appears  on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial

Commenced return to Australia on 5 March 1919 aboard HT Nevasa disembarking on 23 April 1919
