Son of late Thomas H and margaret CARTHEW, Ovens Vale, Myrtleford, Vic.
Lieut Carthew fell in the heroic charge of the 8th Light Horse, Aug. 7, 1915. The Brig. Gen wrote: "A splendid fellow in every way, who gained the esteem and admiration of all." O.C. Sq.: "He was beloved by the whole regiment, to which he is a distinct loss; a fine leader; his men declared they would follow him wherever he led."
