Served and suffered during The Great War.

62 years ago today, on the 28th January 1959, Private James Francis Larritt, 45th Battalion (Reg No-4503), wharf labourer from 32 Bolton Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and 25 Queen Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. and 179 King Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and 90 Annandale Street, Annandale, N.S.W. and 392 Young Street, Annandale, N.S.W., father of four (James, buried Sandgate Cemetery 25.3.1929 as LARRETT, Lily, Robert Francis, Mary Rose), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, aged about 76. ANGLICAN 2-142. 24.

Born at Wollongong, New South Wales about 1883 to Phillip and Rose M Larritt nee Taylor; husband of Lily (Lillian) Larritt nee Ingham (born 1887, married 1910, New Lambton, N.S.W., died 1979), James enlisted September 1915 with the 3rd Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Mr Larritt’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Wharf Labourers' Union Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled date unknown, 70 names inscribed, only 3 marked as Fallen, was on display at the Maritime Museum at Lee Wharf, Newcastle, location now Carrington?

James is resting at a clearly defined gravesite, but unfortunately his headstone is missing, and I am unable to erect a wooden cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Many thanks to Michelle Foster for the extensive family history research.
