Hubert Pike and Robert Dowling Whittaker were the sons of William Richard and Susan (nee Cotte) Whittaker of Garfield Farm, Port Broughton.
Hubert was born at Port Broughton on 6 June 1894. A farmer, he was 21 years old when he enlisted at Kadina on 1 March 1916.
Appointed to 3rd Reinforcements 8 Machine Gun Company he entrained for Melbourne on 29 April and embarked aboard embarked HMAT A “Port Lincoln” on 4 May 1916. After training in England he proceeded overseas to France on 22 December and was taken on strength of 8 Machine Gun Company at Camiers, France on 4 January 1917. Hubert was wounded on 26 September with a shrapnel wound penetrating his chest. He was admitted to 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station where he died at 4.30 am on 28 September 1917. Hubert was buried on the same day at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
