16 Sep 1918: Honoured Military Cross and bar, Villers-Bretonneux, For conspicuous gallantry when in command of the right flank company near Villers Bretonneux on night of 1/2 May 1918 led his company forward a distance of 300 yards in the face of heavy machine gun and rifle fire, effectively disposing of his covering party allowing his company to dig in with few casualties. After skilful consolidation of the position he learnt, at dawn, that the company on his right had withdrawn. Whilst making dispositions to make a defensive flank on his unguarded right he fell severely wounded just as the task was completed.
