He was the son of Henry and Esther Townshend of Beckworth Lodge, Lindfield.

He is remembered on the Lindfield Parish War Memorial 1914-1919. Also remembered here is Driver William Newton Baldock, aged 28. of the Australian Army Service Corps who also served at Gallipoli.
