Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Another Forgotten Digger of The Great War resting peacefully but anonymously at Sandgate Cemetery.

63 years ago today, on the 10th March 1958, Temporary Corporal George Henry Winterbine, 10th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-2189), horse driver (The Dyke, Carrington, N.S.W.), of Gipps Street, Carrington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 76. ANGLICAN 3-200. 37.
Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 25th December 1881 to Thomas Daniel and Sarah Winterbine; husband of Kathleen Winterbine nee Benson (married 1908, Wickham, N.S.W., died?) and Julia Katherine Winterbine nee Raeburn (married 7.10.1918 at the Register Office, Islington, London, died 1969, Cessnock, N.S.W.), widower George (daughter Ethel born 1909, Wickham, N.S.W.), enlisted with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 5.8.1918 (severe trench fever), George returned home with wife Julia September 1919, discharged date unknown.

Mr Winterbine’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates and the Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled on the 20th December 1919, 70 names inscribed, 11 Fallen).

I located George resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so October 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore honour and dignity to Mr Winterbine.

Younger brother Thomas Henry (35th and 56th Battalion, Reg No-230A, born 1888, died 1924) also resting at the cemetery in a marked grave. ANGLICAN 1-72. 109.

Lest We Forget.
