62 years ago today, on the 17th July 1962, Private Alexander Mackie, 5th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-1347), wood carver from Lily Street, Waratah, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. ANGLICAN 1-27. 135.
Born at Rockdale, New South Wales on the 10th October 1895 to James, died 10.8.1934, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 76, buried at ANGLICAN 1-27. 133, from "Yerunga", Prince Street, Waratah, New South Wales, and Mary (Minnie) Kendrick Mackie nee Murray, died 3.12.1934, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 68, mother of 11 (3 sons, 8 daughters), sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-27. 133, from "Yerunga", Prince Street, Waratah, New South Wales; husband of Alma Mary Mackie nee Judd, married 1923, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1974, Sydney, N.S.W., Alex enlisted on the 31st July 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Admitted to hospital 30.3.1917 (influenza), 10.5.1917 (septic left foot), 25.6.1918 (inflammation of connective tissues of left finger, severe), 5.11.1918 (not stated).
Commenced return to Australia 5.3.1919.
Alex arrived home on the 23th April 1919, being discharged on the 18th June 1919.
Mr. Mackie’s name has been inscribed on the Messrs. J. Mackie and Company Honour Roll (whereabouts unknown) and the Waratah-St Philip's Anglican Church Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Alex’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
