A Forgotten Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the Friday afternoon of the 27th October 1944, Private Edward Horsfield, 3rd Battalion (Reg Nos-1125 & 2125), labourer from Suspension Bridge, North Sydney, New South Wales and 10 Hall Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 64. CATHOLIC 2-54. 27.

Listed incorrectly on Sandgate Cemetery database as HORSEFIELD.

Born at Bathurst, New South Wales on the 25th February 1880 to Joseph, died 2.8.1913, St Leonards, N.S.W., age 72, buried at Gore Hill Cemetery, N.S.W., son Frederick memorialised at gravesite, from "Aroma", Abbott Street, North Sydney, N.S.W., and Frances Horsfield nee Thompson, died 28.9.1920, Rockdale, N.S.W., age 76, sleeping at Woronora Memorial Park, N.S.W., from "Aroma", Abbott Street, North Sydney, N.S.W. and Stoney Creek Road, Bexley, N.S.W., Ed enlisted on the 5th October 1914 at Rosehill, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on the 22nd December 1914.

Wounded in action - 30.4.1915 (GSW right buttock), 6.2.1917 (bomb wounds to back, neck, face & right arm, severe).

Admitted to hospital 18.9.1915 (dysentery), 6.12.1915 (pleurisy & bronchitis), 12.12.1915 (cellulitis), 6.7.1917 (scabies & dermatitis).

Commenced return to Australia 21.12.1917.

Ed arrived home on the 12th February 1918, being discharged medically unfit (asthma) on the 9th August 1918.

Received all 3 War Medals.

Mr. Horsfield’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) as HORSEFIELD.

I located Ed resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so November 2025 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Frederick Horsfield, born 3.5.1889, Goulburn, N.S.W., tramway controller man from "Aroma", Abbott Street, North Sydney, New South Wales, enlisted 17.8.1915, Reg No-3090, 17th Battalion, transferred to 55th Battalion 16.2.1916, wounded in action - 20.7.1916 (GSW head, Battle of Fromelles), DOW 20.7.1916, 14th Australian Field Ambulance, age 27, resting at Croix-du-Bac British Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
