Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Henry Bertie Briggs was the youngest of the four sons of Charles and Thurza Briggs of Brighton, Tasmania who enlisted in the AIF. Only one son returned, and he was twice badly wounded.

Henry waited until he was eighteen years of age when he enlisted with his brother William. He arrived in England during March 1917 and joined the 12th Battalion in France late November 1917. He was mortally wounded, shrapnel to both legs, on 8 May 1918 and died in the 15th Casualty Clearing Station the same day. The 12th Battalion fought off an enemy raid on this day near Strazeele in Northern France.

Henry’s eldest brother, Charles Briggs, had been killed at Pozieres during 1916. His brother Edwin had been killed in action only six weeks before Henry died. The fourth brother, William Briggs, was twice wounded before he returned to Australia
