Carl Leopold Tamms was born in June 1892 in Port Pirie, South Australia. He was 22 and 5 months when he first enlisted. His height was average at the time at 5 foot 8 inches and his weight was 143 lbs. He had blue eyes and fair hair. His father was William George Tammsand Carl's eligion was Church of England.

Before the war Carl was a labourer which got paid very minimal so Carl lived a very tough life. 

Carl Leopold Tamms enlisted to the military on the 30th Nov 1914 and then first embarked as a Private with the AIF WW1, 12th Infantry Battalion, HMAT Itonus, Adelaide on the 15 Feb 1915.

On the 4 of July 1915, he was injured and hospitalised. He re-joined the 12th battalion on the 6th of July. Sadly Carl’s story is a very short one as he was killed from a wound to the head in Gallipoli on the 10 August 1915. He died the next day on the 11th of August 1915.

Carl was buried at the Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt. He had left his will to his father William George Tamms.
