"Brigadier-General S. C. E. Herring, One of the most distinguished of our soldiers

Brigadier-General Herring, C.M.G., D.S.O., Croix de Guerre, Legion of Honour— is standing as a Nationalist, and has the National Soldiers and Sailors' Federation nomination. He left Australia an 1914 with, the rank of captain, and took part in the landing at Gallipoli. He saw continuous service on the Peninsula, and took part in en gagements at Pope's Hill, Quinn's Post (wounded, but remained on duty), Suvla Bay, Hill 60, and was in command of the rear party furnished by the 4th Brigade at the evacuation.

He was promoted to major and temporary lieutenant-colonel. Shortly afterwards came his transfer to the command of the 45th Battalion with the rank of lieut.-colonel. He landed in France in June, 1916, and took part in engagements at Pozieres, Ypres, Guedecourt, Bullecourt, Messines, Passchendaele, and other places. In June, 1918, he was transferred to command the 13th Australian Infantry Brigade with the rank of brigadier-general, and remained in command of that brigade until it was demobilised in April, 1919.
