105 years ago today, on the 4th July 1918, Corporal Norman Stanley Bathurst Fairbairn, also known as Nin or Ninnie and Bluey, 13th Battalion (Reg No-3759), fettler from 70 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales, was Killed in Action by enemy sniper or machine gun bullets at the Battle of Hamel, France, age 27.

Born at Bathurst, New South Wales on the 7th May 1891 to John Henry (born 7.2.1847, Sydney, N.S.W., died 6.7.1928, Redfern, N.S.W., age 82) of 5 Calder Road, Darlington, (Redfern) New South Wales, and Ruth Fairbairn nee Fletcher (born 1.9.1850, died 31.10.1915, Islington, N.S.W., age 65) of 70 Fern Street, Islington, New South Wales, Nin enlisted on the 6th August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 20th December 1915.
Admitted to hospital 5.2.1916 (influenza, mild), 26.7.1917 (abscess of left leg, scabies, dental), 21.9.1917 (furunculosis), 10.12.1917 (sprained left elbow, severe).

Nin is resting at Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France. Plot III Row D Grave 10.

Place of Association – Islington, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Fairbairn’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the South Newcastle Rugby League Football Club Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised gravesite of the Fairbairn family in remembrance of Nin’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-58. 20.
