Biography contributed by Oliver Rowe

Thomas Michael Clarken was born in Nackara, South Australia, on the 23rd of May, 1895. He was raised by his mother, Margaret Kilderry and his father, Matthew Clarken.

Thomas had four brothers; James, Matthew, Peter, Patrick and a sister, Ellen. He lived in his family home in Nackara, which is close to Peterborough. Thomas and his family were Roman Catholic. He was a farm labourer before the war.

Thomas enlisted on the 30th of July, 1915. His measurements were the average height and weight for a twenty one year old in 1915. He trained in Egypt and served in France. He fought on the Western Front with his battalion (The 48th Battalion) in the Battle of Albert. Thomas was shot and wounded in his right leg on the 6th of August, 1916 and was pulled from battle. He recovered in the Canadian General Hospital. After a long recovery, Thomas returned to action in early 1917 and was wounded again in his left thigh on the 15th of April, 1917.

Fortunately, Thomas came home safely, and lived to the age of sixty-seven but sadly passed away on the 4th of November, 1962. He was survived by wife Kathleen and their six children.
