Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Francis Robert Penny was the son of Thomas and Jane Penny, of Hughenden, Queensland. His mother had passed away a month after he was born in 1895. His father, Thomas Penny was an esteemed old pioneer of Hughenden and district, and the town was much saddened when Thomas Penny passed away in January 1916.

Francis’ older brother, 4882 Lce. Cpl. Henry John Penny also served in the 15th Battalion AIF and was killed in action at Gueudecourt on 1st February 1917, aged 30.

Francis enlisted in the 5th Light Horse Regiment, at 19 years of age, in 1914. He left Australia February 1915 but contracted venereal disease and was sent home to Australia during late 1915.

Frank Penny enlisted again, shortly after his brother Harry had been killed in action. He arrived in England during July 1917. He joined the 15th Battalion on the Western Front during February 1918.

He was mortally wounded in the back by shell fragments on 4 July 1918 and died in a Casualty Clearing Station the next day.

His sister wrote on his roll of honour form, “There were two enlisted from this family, and both were killed.”
