Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

John Gandy was the young husband of Ada Gandy, who was living at Ballarat North, Victoria after the war. They had only married a fortnight before John left Australia for the Western Front. John Gandy’s daughter was born to Ada only a few weeks before he died. Mother and daughter were awarded a pension.

According to his Red Cross file John was admitted to the 14th General Hospital on the 20 July 1916, suffering from a gunshot wound to the left shoulder from the Battle of Fromelles the day before. He died two days later.

His brother, 12298 Lance Corporal Joseph Ward Gandy M.M., M.S.M., 10th Field Ambulance AIF, was awarded two decorations for bravery and meritorious service.

Their parents were Arthur and Henrietta Gandy of Hawthorn, Victoria.
