Crace was born in East Gawler, in October 1888. His family members included Charles Crace,
his father, Jean Millard Crace, his wife, and Jas Ferguson, whom Crace was a caretaker of. Before enlisting for the AIF Crace worked as a Clerk
Crace enlisted to the AIF on the 23rd of August 1915, and his enlistment was approved on the 23rd of August 1915 after undergoing medical examination that he passed on 14th of August. He arrived in camp on the 25th, 1915. He was later allocated to a unit on the 1st of November 1915. His rank upon enlistment was Private.
Crace first served in the Base Infantry Depot before being moved to the 13th Reinforcement of the 10th Infantry which he served in from the 28th of August to the 31st of October. He was then transferred to the 50th Battalion on the 1st of November 1915. From the 1st of November 1915, Crace was promoted to Acting Quartermaster Sergeant in the unit Bk/10th. Crace embarked on the 11th of January 1916.
Crace was transferred to the 50th Battalion on the 29th of February 1916. Upon joining the 50th Battalion he was reverted to the rank of Private on the 29th of February. On the 1st of March 1916, Crace was promoted to Temp. Seargent. He later became the Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant with the rank of Warrant Officer Class II on the 12th of March 1916. Previously having been promoted to Sergeant from the 1st of March to the 1st of May 1916. On the 12th of November 1917, Crace who was in the 50th Battalion at the time was promoted and assumed the position of Quartermaster and Honorary Lieutenant which was previously held by Captain Moule who was killed in France. He was Mentioned in Despatches in 1918 for his service.
On the 3rd of March 1918, Crace took leave to the UK and later returned on the 17th of July 1918. Then on the 29th of September 1918, he went on leave to the UK again, later returning to his unit in the AIF on the 13th of October 1918.
After the war ended he was admitted to hospital on the 17th of February 1919 with pneumonia and was released from the hospital on the 21st of June 1919.
Crace’s grave memorial is found at St. George's Anglican Church Cemetery, Gawler East, South Australia. His death occurred on the 26th of May 1938, and he died at around 50 years of age.
