His brother, 1812 Pte. James Michael Briscoe 52nd Battalion AIF died of wounds in Belgium on 19 October 1917, aged 23. They were the sons of Francis and Sarah How Briscoe, of Chudleigh, Tasmania.
Only three days prior Francis was awarded a Military Medal “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Ypres on the morning of 16 October 1916 when passing a battery of artillery under heavy enemy shell fire, Briscoe noticed a man lying wounded and he immediately went his assistance and moved him to a place of safety, attended to his injuries and helped move him to a dressing station. Sergeant Briscoe was under intense shell fire for a considerable time and the Battery personnel had all temporarily vacated.”
Francis returned to Australia in March 1919.
