John Joseph known as Jack enlisted after his eldest brother James joined the 31st Bn AIF and third youngest brother George who was only 17 also joined up but in the 5th Light Horse. He travelled from the family farm at Crows Nest to Enoggera and joined the 16th Reinforcements of the 5th Light Horse, the same that his two youngest brothers Joe and Steve would also join. Jack's unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A47 Mashobra on 5 April 1916
He wasn't taken on strength and was transferred to the Anzac Provost Corps
from Alexandria to Tidworth England, 1 January 1917. He was appointed Lance Corporal, 30 June 1917; Acting Corporal, 30 June 1917 was here he met his future wife Edith. He married Edith Ethel PLANK, spinster, aged 21, at Shipton Bellinger Parish Church, Hampshire, 20 September 1917. Ede would return after his death as they had no children. He was then transferred to the Artillery At Tel el Kebir, 25 May 1916 as a Gunner in the 1st Field Artillery Brigade to serve in France. Jack returned to Australia 14 January 1919 and was discharged on the 22 April 1919.
He was one of five brothers who enlisted in WW1- three under 18.1566 Pte George GAVIN, 5th Light Horse Regiment, returned to Australia, 1 January 1919; 482 Lance Corporal James GAVIN, 31st Bn, killed in action, 19 July 1916; 3261 Pte Patrick Joseph GAVIN, 5th Light Horse Regiment, returned to Australia, 28 June 1919; 3262 Pte Stephen GAVIN, Australian Mounted Division Train, returned to Australia, 10 July 1919.
His other two brothers were with the Queensland Police Force protecting the Homefront.
