Charles Spencer Barnes and his older brother Harrie Barnes both joined up in Melbourne during 1915 and left Australia with different units. Somehow, they managed to be both transferred to the 14th Battalion in early 1916. During the Battle of Pozieres it was said they were in the same platoon, by a witness who was in the same platoon. They both and others were in the bay of trench traverse which was blown in by a heavy shell and they were killed instantly, along with Private Abel Ellis of the 14th Battalion.
Both of the brothers parents had died in 1914 and their sister stated they were both associated with Albert Park in Melbourne.
