Son of Leander George Quail and Mary Quail nee Milton of Buchan, East Gippsland, Victoria. Brother of Alexander John Quail who returned to Australia on 7 August 1919 having served with the 8th Light Horse Regiment.

Commenced return to Australia on 29 April 1919 aboard HT Dorset disembarking on 11 June 1919.
