Palestine, Mejdel Jaffa Area, Latrun 3 January 1918

A Frank Hurley image of the The 3rd Australian Light Horse Brigade, returning to a rest camp after being in action on the Khurbertha-Ibn-Harith front, in Palestine. They are seen approaching their camping place for the night. Brigadier General Wilson is riding at the head of the column with Major Anderson DSO, the Brigade Major, on his left.

The notion of a "Desert Column" as epitomised in Ion Idriess' classic novel, is starkly illustrated with the Brigade column extending to the horizon.

The 3rd Light Horse Brigade comprised the 8th (/explore/units/172), 9th (/explore/units/68) and 10th (/explore/units/249) Light Horse Regiments, drawn primarily from Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia respectively.

Battle Honours of the Brigade included:

Defence of ANZAC

Suvla / Sari Bair - described in the 'August Offensive' (/explore/campaigns/3) campaign page which also includes 'The Nek' where the 10th Light Horse Regiment was infamously decimated.

Romani (/explore/campaigns/73) - 3-5 Aug 1916

Maghdaba (/explore/campaigns/83) - 23 Dec 1916 - 5 Jan 1917

Gaza (/explore/campaigns/75) - 26 Mar-31 Oct 1917
