Died on this date – 25th February…… Joseph Roco Radoslovich was born at Port Pirie, South Australia on 2nd February, 1899.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 1st July, 1916 as an 18 year old, single, Farm Hand from 37 Charles Street, Unley, South Australia.
As Joseph Radoslovich was under the age of 21, his parents were required to sign their consent for their son to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force for active service abroad. On 19th June, 1916 his mother (father deceased) wrote the following: “I Mrs W. Readel hearby give my consent to my son J. Radoslovich to enlist in the A.I.F. (signed) Mrs W. Readel.”
Private Joseph Radoslovich, Service number 2135, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on HMAT Anchises (A68) on 28th August, 1916 with the 11th Infantry Brigade, 43rd Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 11th October, 1916.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
On 13th November, 1916 Private Radoslovich was transferred to & was taken on strength of 38th Battalion while in England from 43rd Battalion.
He proceeded overseas to France via Southampton, England on 22nd November, 1916.
Private Joseph Radoslovich was wounded in action on 8th February, 1917. He was admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance on 8th February, 1917 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Back then transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Private Radoslovich was transferred & admitted to 13th General Hospital at Boulogne, France on 13th February, 1917. He was listed for transfer to England on 14th February, 1917 & embarked for England on Hospital Ship St. Denis on 15th February, 1917.
On 16th February, 1917 Private Radoslovich was admitted to County of London War Hospital, Epsom, England with G.S.W. to Spine – dangerously ill. The Hospital Admissions form recorded “Spine damaged by large piece of shrapnel ____ 4 – 5 dorsal vertebrae. Shrapnel removed, spinal arch smashed to pieces. Complete loss of sensation below……”
Private Joseph Radoslovich, 38th Battalion, “A” Company, died at 6.20 am on 25th February, 1917 at County of London War Hospital, Epsom, England from wounds received in action in France - G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Spine.
He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England where around 360 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
