Biography contributed by Paul Trevor

From serching the historical birth records of Queensland's Births, Deaths and Marriages I discovered that Lieutenant Robert Darwin Lonergan and his brother 3132 Sergeant Cecil Lonergan were actually born with the surname O'LONERGAN.

Looking at period newspapers (Trove) of the day, it records articles of Robert Darwin Lonergan, many years prior to enlisting with his surname as LONERGAN. Being of Irish-decent, this was more likely the reason of the 'O' being dropped off the surname.

The two enlisted children of Robert Valintine O'Lonergan (Lonergan) and Annie (née Chamberlain) O'Lonergan (Lonergan) of Milton, Queensland:-

3132 Sgt. Cecil Lonergan (/explore/people/233017) - returned to Australia;

Lt. Robert Darwin Lonergan - returned to Australia.
