From serching the historical birth records of Queensland's Births, Deaths and Marriages I discovered that 3132 Sergeant Cecil Lonergan and his brother Lieutenant Robert Darwin Lonergan were actually born with the surname O'LONERGAN.
Looking at period newspapers (Trove) of the day, it records articles of Cecil Roderic Lonergan, many years prior to enlisting with his surname as LONERGAN. Being of Irish-decent, this was more likely the reason of the 'O' being dropped off the surname.
The two enlisted children of Robert Valintine O'Lonergan (Lonergan) and Annie (née Chamberlain) O'Lonergan (Lonergan) of Milton, Queensland:-
Lt. Robert Darwin Lonergan (/explore/people/116889) - returned to Australia;
3132 Sgt. Cecil Lonergan - returned to Australia.
