Alfred was killed during the attack on Hill 60 27 August 1915 according to Red Cross Wounded and Missing files. 

In 1919 the Canterbury Mounted Rifles from New Zealand were occupying the Anzac area of Gallipoli. They found the following Identity disc at Hill 60 found but no remains near it. '166 Brown AB 17th AIF'. The disc was sent to Brown's brother during September 1919.
