Enlisted without the consent of his parents who refused to give consent as he was too young and they did not believe in war.He had given his age as almost 20 when in fact he was 18

Son of Joseph Oliver and Sarah Anne Oliver nee White of Kabra, QLD.

On 7 July 1919 John married Alice Eliza Packard in the Registrar Office, St. George, Hanover Square, London, England. Registrar Charles E. Johnson officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 21 December 1919 aboard HT Port Napier disembarking on 10 February 1919
