Brother of Charles William Vandenbergh who returned to Australia on 1 June 1918 having served with the 5th Divisional Ammunition Column and Reginald Vandenbergh who returned to Australia on 5 July 1918 having served with the 6th Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company.
On 4 March 1919 Alfred married Annie Elizabeth Green in the Sollhul Church, Warwick England. Rector T. B. Harvey Brooks officiated.
Returned to Australia on 23 August 1918 aboard Zealandia
