At the time of enlistment he was serving in the Permanent Army Force
Son of Richard Hawkey and Mary Ann Hawkey of Parramatta, NSW. Brother of Frederick Joseph Hawkey who returned to Australia on 12 July 1919 having served with the ANZAC Cyclist Battalion and 4th Battalion
Husband of Annie Louisa Hawkey nee Krinks of 'Kenyshaw', Melford Street, Hurlstone Park, NSW. John and Annie married during 1905c in Sydney, NSW
Previously served in the Boer War with the NSW Mounted Rifles and was later part in the contingent which took part in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897
Commenced return to Australia on 3 September 1919 aboard HT Barambah disembarking on 25 October 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
