Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 6th October 1918, Private Frank Jefferson Haynes, also known as Francis, 9th Field Ambulance Australian Army Medical Corps (Reg No-11981), clerk (Messrs. W. Winn & Company, Limited, 16 years), from Throsby Street, Wickham, New South Wales, died from carbuncle face and meningitis at No. 3 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France, age 34.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 27th March 1884 as Francis John to William Henry (died 4.4.1923, Waratah, N.S.W., age 71), from Power Street, Islington, New South Wales (1904) and Throsby Street, Wickham, N.S.W. (1915) and 45 Stanton Road, Haberfield, N.S.W. (1918) and corner of Cross & Tourle Streets, Mayfield West, N.S.W. (1918), and Caroline Annie Haynes nee Jackson (died tragically 12.2.1904, Throsby Creek, Wickham, N.S.W., age 49), mother of 6, from Power Street, Islington, New South Wales, engaged to Miss. Ruby Delaney, "Mormaton", Blackheath, New South Wales, Frank enlisted on the 7th September 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on the 11th May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 10.7.1916.

Granted leave to France from 8.6.1917 to 18.6.1917 and to England from 18.1.1918 to 16.2.1918.

Wounded in action - 1.10.1918 (gas).


Mr. Haynes is resting at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. Block S Plot II Row L Grave 22.

Winn & Co., Limited, Memorial Tablet, Townsville 9th Field Ambulance Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial or the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board 1 or 2.

Attended Carrington Public School, Carrington, N.S.W., no Roll of Honour produced.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Haynes gravesite in remembrance of their son’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-41. 49.
