Cecil Smith served at Gallipoli from the start of October 1915. He only lasted a few weeks before being evacuated with enteritis. He was wounded in action at Pozieres on the 4 August 1916 and evacuated to England with gunshot or shrapnel wounds to the right leg and left shoulder. He rejoined his battalion during January 1917 and was severely wounded at Bullecourt on 6 May 1917. He died of his wounds six days later in the 1st Australian General Hospital located in Rouen.

His younger brother, Corporal Frederic Irwern Smith 4th Battalion AIF had been killed in action at Lagnicourt less than a month previous on 15 April 1917.
