Biography contributed by John Oakes

Leonard SELMON (Service Number 709) was born on 3rd July 1892 in Kogarah. He began working in the Railways on 21st September 1908 as a probationer in the Traffic Branch.  On 26th December 1911, he resigned. However, a year later he was re-employed. He began his new position as a junior porter in Lismore on 18th December 1912.  After another year and a half of working for the Railways, he was released from duty to join the AIF. He enlisted on 23rd August 1914 and was 22 at the time.

He embarked from Brisbane on 24th September 1914 on SS ‘Omrah’. He probably landed on Gallipoli on Anzac Day and some documents show him as being missing in action from that date.

The official Report of Death records that he died on 29th May 1915 at Gaba Tepe (although he may have died earlier).

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli, Turkey.

Following his death, his mother was sent the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal to commemorate her son’s service.

- based on the Australian War Memorial Honour Roll and notes for the Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board.
