Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Alfred Roy Payne enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 19 July 1915, aged almost 22.

He embarked overseas on 28 January 1916 and arrived in Egypt on 28 February, where he was later transferred and taken on strength of the 58th Battalion on 1 April 1916.

The battalion departed Egypt on 17 June 1916, disembarked at Marseilles on 23 June, then immediately moved by train to the area around Hazebrouck in the north of France.

The 58th Battalion went into its, and the AIF’s, first major action at Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and it was here on the same day that Pte Alfred Roy Payne was killed in action.

He was buried near where he fell however the grave could not be located after the war, and he has no known grave.

He is remembered at the VC Corner Australian Cemetery & Memorial at Fromelles, France.
