Gunner Arthur William Barnes, killed in action in France on the 31 July 1916, was the only surviving son of Mr. Thomas and the late Mrs. Minnie Barnes, of Enfield, which is about 20 kilometres south of Ballarat Victoria. He enlisted in October 1915, and left Australia in January 1916, with the 6th Field Artillery Brigade. He was educated at the Enfield State school, was 26 years of age, and left a widow and two infant daughters.
