105 years ago today, on the 3rd May 1917, Gunner Michael George Coghlan, 12th Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-20921), draper's assistant (Finney, Isles, Ltd, Brisbane, QLD), from "Hazelmere", 111 Heal Street, New Farm, Brisbane (C/ Mrs. E. Wyeth-aunt), Died of Wounds at the 2nd Battles of Bullecourt, France, age 23.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 21st October 1893 to Michael Patrick (died 1952) and Annie (died 1933) Coghlan of "Avoca", 1 Church Street, Mayfield, New South Wales, Michael enlisted September 1915 with the 9th Australian Field Artillery Brigade at Brisbane, Queensland.

Wounded in action - 3.5.1917 (SW left arm & thigh).

Older brother Edward Joseph (30th Battalion, Reg No-389, born 1891, died 1926) resting at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 1-21. 71.

Older brother Richard Patrick (56th Battalion, Reg No-3130, born 1886, died 6.6.1950, resting at Field of Mars Cemetery, Sydney, New South Wales, name not listed on the Northern Cemeteries database) also served 1st A.I.F.

Younger brother Francis Cornelius also enlisted, but was rejected? (no Reg No).

Mr. Coghlan’s name has been inscribed on the St Mary's-Marists' Brothers School (Newcastle) Honour Roll, Waratah Park Memorial Gates (photos, unveiled on the 23rd February 1921, 68 names originally inscribed of the Fallen, 70 names now inscribed, 613 pound cost) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Father Michael a member of the Newcastle - Court Hunter No-4583 Ancient Order of Foresters, but son's name not inscribed on its Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the family gravesite in remembrance of their son’s supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-F Com. 60.
