Jesse was the fourth of twelve children of Charles Jesse Bishop (b1869 in Northam, WA) and Hannah Burton (b1875 in York, WA). Charles (a Labourer) and Hannah married in 1892 in York, WA where they resided most of their lives. Charles worked on construction of the railway line from Clackline to Spencer's Brook, and later was a Farmer in Greenhills and Qualen.

Jesse was a Farm Hand working on the family farm in Greenhills when he enlisted in the AIF in August 1915. He served as a Private (Service No:3406) with 16th Infantry Battalion and Disembarked at Marseilles, France from HMT Canada on 9 June 1916. Jesse was declared Missing in action at the Battle of Pozieres on 6 August 1916, and declared KiA on 8 August. To his mother's distress, no personal belongings or ket were ever recovered.
