James Archibald Heron was born in Fitzroy, Victoria in 1895. His father was Arthur Cowan Heron of Keane St Cottesloe. He was a clerk and Presbyterian who was serving with the Citizen Forces when he enlisted at Blackboy Hill on the 15.6.15, aged 19 years 7 months. He was allocated the rank of Private with Service Number 2205 into the 12th Infantry Battalion. James was described as being 5 feet 6½ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 30-32½ inches, fair complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Borda A30 on 25.6.15. On the 1.3.16 he was transferred to the 12th Infantry Battalion, then on the 14.3.16 to the 24th Howitzer Brigade as Gunner. On the 1.1.18 he was appointed Corporal and Bombardier with the 12th F.A.B. On the 24.5.18 at Cadet School, St Johns Wood, he qualified for a commission. In June 1918, he was off duty for one week with influenza. On the 1.8.18 he was promoted to Sergeant and on the 5.12 18 to 2nd Lieutenant. James returned to Australia per Berrima A 35 on 2.1.19. on transport duty. His appointment was terminated on the 4.4.19. He married Hilda Lavinia Patterson in 1920.
After the war, James went into partnership with Charles August Petterson in a Shipwrights business at Victoria Quay. This partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in 1931. In 1937, James was working as a shipwright in Fremantle and was a witness in the inquest of a man who had fallen into the hold of a ship. Stephen John Mais, carpenter, (also on the same Honour Roll) was called as a witness. James died in Fremantle on the 21.11.1956, aged 61 and is memorialised at Karrakatta Crematorium Rose Garden D Position 0120.
