From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
54 years ago today, on the 13th February 1968, Private Clarence Bede Gallagher, 33rd Battalion (Reg No-2074), labourer from Krambach, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. CATHOLIC 2-31. 151.
Born at Krambach, New South Wales on the 27th November 1898 to John Joseph and Jane Julianna Gallagher; husband of Mary C Gallagher nee Mayer (married 1935, Mayfield, N.S.W., died 1955, sleeping here), Clarence enlisted April 1916 with the 36th Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 11.10.1916 (not stated), 2.2.1917 (scabies), 25.11.1918 (bronchopneumonia - a type of pneumonia that causes inflammation in the alveoli - tiny air sacs in your lungs that take up the oxygen you breathe in and keep your body going. Although they’re microscopic, alveoli are the workhorses of your respiratory system).
Older brother Stephen (33rd Battalion, Reg No-2072, born 1894, died 1973) also resting at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 3-99. 210.
Clarence returned home March 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 19th May 1919.
Mr. Gallagher’s name has been inscribed on the Krambach First and Second World Wars Honour Roll, Krambach First World War Memorial Avenue and Honour Roll and the Nabiac War Memorial.
Tree planting ceremony, Krambach First World War Memorial Avenue, 13 Gallaghers having enlisted.
There is no indication inscribed on Clarence’s headstone plaque of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
