Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Herbert was the son of Matthias William and Emily Ann Wood, of Mascot, New South Wales. His younger brother, 5421 Pte. Roderick Oscar Wood 20th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action only nine days before Herbert, on 20 September 1917, aged 23.
The two brothers died in only a few miles apart, in the immense struggle which took place around Ypres, Belgium, during September and October of 1917.
Their father, Matthias, died in Sydney on 11 January 1921. Their mother Emily received pensions for both sons.
Herbert enlisted in the 1st Battalion during September 1915. He was transferred to the 45th Battalion when he arrived in Egypt in early 1916. He was slightly wounded with shell shock during the Pozieres battle in August 1916. He was with his Battalion continuously up until the day he was killed.
Herbert left a will in favour of his mother.
