Private James David Roche (Service Nos:V57646/VX106107) initially served in the ACMF with 7th Infantry Battalion from 17 December 1941 to 22 July 1942. Private Roche was 'in the field' at Sellheim, QLD on 23 July 1942 when he enlisted in the AIF, serving two Tours of Duty with 39 Battalion in New Guinea (Port Moresby, Aitape, Wewak) between 19 November 1942 and 20 December 1945. Private Roche was attached to 39 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 5 June 1946. He was the youngest of four siblings (Robert, Andrew and John) who served in WWII.

Born in Maryborough, Victoria in 1918, Jim was sixth of seven children (and youngest of five sons) of Robert Gubbins Roche (b1877 in Yackandandah, Victoria) and Alice Mongan (b1883 in Yackandandah, Victoria). Robert worked as a Sluicer and Miner at Allan's Flat and Osborne's Flat (via Yackandandah), and he and Alice married in 1906 at Osborne's Flat via Yackandandah. Robert and Alice settled in the Laancoorie District - Creswick and Maryborough - where they raised their family and Robert was a Miner and Railways Employee.

Apart from his Military Service, Jim lived in Maryborugh all his life, working as a Hairdresser. In 1946 he married Winifred (Win) Joyce Burne (b1924 in Stratford, Victoria). Jim died in 1984 and Win in 1994.
