Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Robert Stewart was the eldest of three brothers from Ormeau, near the Gold Coast in Queensland, who died with the AIF during WW1.

Robert joined the 1st Australian General Hospital and served in France for almost 18 months before he was wounded in the chest by shrapnel. He died of his wounds nine days later in a hospital in Etaples.

His brother, 2442A Pte. William Stewart 9th Battalion AIF, was killed in action only three weeks later on 1 November 1917, aged 30. His youngest brother, 6392 Pte. George Stewart 25th Battalion AIF, was also killed in action 17 July 1918, aged 25. They were all the sons of Robert and Jane Ann Stewart, of Ormeau, Queensland.
