Son of William Henry Oats and Harriet Elizabeth Oats nee Watkins of Whittlesea, Victoria.

Prior to enlisting Alfred was under the Gauardianship of Cecilia Black manager of the Presbyterian Y Scots Church, Childrens A9d Society.

Next of kin given as his sister Elizabeh Sarah Oats of Redan Street, St Kilda, Victoria.

Address at the time of enlistment was given as Barracks, Queenscliff, Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 2 January 1919 aboard HT Berrima disembarking on 19 February 1919
