66 years ago today, on the 10th April 1957, Private Edmond John Mason, 13th Battalion (Reg No-3828), labourer from Blythe Street, Tamworth, New South Wales and Wangi Wangi, N.S.W. (1938), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 78. CATHOLIC 2-66. 27.
Born at Nundle, New South Wales on the 10th June 1878 as Edward John to John Thomas and Catherine Mason; husband of Ada May Mason nee Alderman (married 1899, Tamworth, N.S.W., died ?) of Peel Street, Tamworth, New South Wales and Hyman Street, Tamworth, N.S.W., Edmond enlisted on the 10th August 1915 with the 4th Battalion at Armidale, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A7 Medic on the 30th December 1915.
Admitted to hospital 11.4.1916 (not stated), 15.2.1917 (GSW left thigh).
Wounded in action 14.8.1916 (GSW hand & fingers), 27.11.1916 (SW or GSW left arm & head), 4.2.1917 (GSW left thigh).
Embarked for England 14.2.1917.
Edmond returned home on the 4th March 1918, being discharged medically unfit (overage, rheumatism) on the 16th April 1918.
Mr. Mason’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on the Tamworth Anzac Park First World War Memorial Gates.
I have placed poppies at this WW1 Digger’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
