Henry Alfred Testro was born in the district called Wansworth just on the outskirts of London, England, on the 4th of January in 1880. He moved to his soon to be called hometown at Clifton Hill Victoria at the age of 8. His occupation in Melbourne was a saddler. Henry was married to Mrs Florence Testro before he enlisted for World War 1 with whom he had 6 six children with. He was a religious man and was a Baptist. Henry had never been convicted by the Civil Power. He was 5 foot 7 inches and he weighed 12 stone and 6 pounds. He had brown eyes and black hair and was pale in complexion. There were 4 vertical scars on his right knee and 2 scars in his left arm.
He was 34 years old when he was enlisted for World War 1 in Melbourne on the 9th of September 1914. His service number was 3026 and he was ranked as a Gunner but then was soon promoted to a Saddler Sergeant in the 1st Division Ammunition Column.
Henry was in No. 15 General Hospital in Alexandria from the 10th of August suffering from abscesses but was getting on well. Henry was soon discharged from war as he was medically unfit and embarked on H.S “Beltana” for Australia on the 17th of September 1915. Once he was back in Melbourne, he was discharged from the A.I.F from arthritis in his right knee. He received a victory medal, a Star Medal and a British war medal after the war on the 11th of September 1922.
Henry and his wife and 6 children moved to Queensland and lived at 23 Malcom Street, Hawthorne. When they transferred from Melbourne to Brisbane, Henry lost his certificate of discharge which he needed to show to join the Imperial League. He died of natural causes at the age of 79 in Brisbane on the 10th of February 1959. The resting place of Henry Alfred Testro was presented by Mt Thompson Memorial Gardens in Queensland as part of their service.
