Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Mr. James Harry Smith, who died suddenly at Watheroo (W.A.). was the second son of the late James and Emily Smith, of Spalding. Mr. Smith was engaged in farming at Spalding some years ago and previouslv had kept hotels at Millicent, Kalahgadoo, and Mount Gambier. He was well known in sporting circles in the South-East, where he owned and raced several horses. At the outbreak ol the Great War he enlisted and served overseas. After the Armistice he took up farming at Gulnare. About 12 years ago he went to Watheroo and farmed a large property in partnership with Mr. T. J. Horgan. of Glenelg. He wa.s a prominent figure at Watheroo and took with him from South Australia farming methods which were far in advance of those in general use at that period. His ideas were copied with excellent results by a large number of farmers. He was an ex-member of the Moora Road Board lor the North ward, and president of Watheroo sporting bodies. He carried out experiments in the growing of fodder glasses, and established a fine line of Koonoona sheep on the property. A widow, formerly Miss Mary Gill, of Spalding, survives.
